Dr. Shona Nag, Director of Oncology at The Sahyadri Group of Hospitals, Pune.
Since 2000, Dr. Nag’s focus has been on breast cancer. The first clinical study that she undertook was on breast cancer, her findings were widely referenced and they won her a publication spot in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Nag has worked closely with the best breast surgeons in Pune namely, Dr. Koppiker, Dr. Mane, and Dr. Pranjali Gadgil. She is currently practicing as a team with Dr. Anupama and Dr. Sujai Hegde, both renowned experts in the field of Gynaecology.
She has been working very closely with the breast cancer group at The Tata Memorial hospital where her research collaborations are very strong. With access to their facilities, she jointly hosts breast cancer conferences together each year.
80% of Dr. Nag’s practice comprises breast and Gynae cancers since 2004, therefore she is the only expert medical oncologist in Pune at present who specializes in breast, ovarian and cervical cancer due to her great in-depth knowledge in these fields.
Along with Dr. Nag’s plethora of expertise, she also has access to expert opinions from other breast oncologists at The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, and The Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York. She can get opinions from her team there, within 24 hours for her patients.
She has also been on several international advisory boards and drug development projects in the breast, ovarian and cervical cancers for brands like; Ixabepilone, Eribulin, Olaparib, and Biosimilar Trastuzumab to name a few. Dr. Nag has also been a Program Director for the breast and Gynae session at the UAE (eIOC) International Congress in Dubai and the iBRCA forum.
Dr. Nag is an expert for the online Navya service run by the National Cancer Grid for breast and Gynae cancers and has given over 1600 expert opinions in the last 2 years.
She is currently a resident expert at The Sahyadri Group of Hospitals, Pune, and the hospitals there have fully equipped breast care centres with digital mammography facilities, gamma probe, and radiotherapy equipment. The hospital also houses a qualified Medical Geneticist who runs a clinic for hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. Rehabilitation and psychologist for breast cancer are also available at the institutes, especially for breast cancer patients. Dr. Nag also spearheads a breast cancer support group and survivorship programs for breast and ovarian cancer through the Nag Foundation.
In 2010, together with Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Dr. Nag won the Ethnic Research Award for her research in breast cancer and bagged a grant of $220,000 from GlaxoSmithKline. The project has been completed and awaits publication.
Dr. Nag has also been a Visiting Medical Oncologist at KEM Hospital, Mumbai, exclusively for the breast cancer clinic once a month in a teaching position.
